Urban Fiction
If you are someone that knows me well then you are well aware that I enjoy reading very much. Typically the books that I read fall into what is titled the Urban Fiction genre. I thought about that category and realized that I don't particularly appreciate the type of books that I read being categorized in that genre because I find it to be stereotypical and here's why. Not all African American people are urban. Some of us live in the country and the suburbs yet we are all being labeled as Urban and anything in regards to being African American is being labeled urban as well. I don't care for the word urban because it carries with it a negative connotation. When I think of that word I think of ignorance, minimal education, criminal and other deviant behavior, poverty, and promiscuity among other things. I don't know if to some people I am coming off a little too strong or if I seem like I'm overreacting but to me the word urban doesn't fit properly to describe all literature penned by African American authors. What are your thoughts?
